Senior Dementia Senior dementia 11 Years, Worse 3 Years.

Over the last eight months my husband has received 4 series of 10 acupuncture treatments, twice a week, under the care of Drs. He and Zhong.

To date, the results have been significant. When he was last seen by his neurologists and PCP, we expressed concerns about 1) increasing rigidity in his gait and a significant reduction in his tolerance for maintaining a regular walking program; 2) an increasingly shortened attention span and loss of interest in events going on around him; 3) an abrupt loss off spontaneous verbal communication (except when asleep and dreaming); and 4)involuntary balling of the fists for extended periods of time, so tight that he loses the ability to open and use his hands, and the circulation in his hands is interrupted leaving his hands freezing cold and difficult to pry open.

After a round of 3 series of treatments over the last 3 months, his spontaneous short verbal phrases/expressions during the conscious state have been restored and are appropriate to the situation (expressions of appreciation but mostly in response to things that he doesn’t like or want to do); he has regained his tolerance and strength for a 2 mile walk ; the tight balling of the fists presents only occasionally; and most surprising, on his 3rd visit to the Y last month, he entered the water and swam. We wondered with the improvements that we were observing whether he might show interest in swimming again. He was an avid daily swimmer when conditions permitted, but has not entered the pool and has shown fear of the water over the past 5 years.

Although he has only minor difficulty walking up stairs, he experiences fear and hesitancy walking down stairs which results from depth perception problems, however we’ve observed that his ability to walk downstairs has also shown significant improvement over the last 6 months.
